ACCESSIBILITY ISSUES IN THE REC CENTERSRC pool lift

1. Is the Student Recreation Center’s swimming pool accessible?

The Rec Center pool has a lift (photo to right) to assist swimmers who need to transfer from a wheelchair to the pool. We request that an individual who needs help transferring is accompanied by an attendant or friend who can safely provide assistance. Lifeguards are not allowed to leave their stations to assist in a transfer.

2. What type of locker room facilities are available for persons with disabilities?

The men’s and womeusing the lat pulldown machinen’s locker rooms both have adapted changing rooms to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities.

The men's and women's locker rooms both have adapted changing area to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities. A private shower and changing area is also available -- located across the hall from the men's and women's locker rooms. This area is ADA-equipped but may be used by all patrons. There are lockers reserved just outside the private shower/restroom area that can be rented based on special request by the term. Please see information posted on the lockers for instructions.

3. Does the Rec Center have any adapted strength and conditioning equipment ?

The strength and conditioning area has automatic doors and wide isles to accommodate persons in wheelchairs. The cardio room has an arm ergometer with a detachable seat for wheelchair access, and the strength training area has a Hoist® brand multi-station apparatus (photo to left) specifically designed for disabled access.

4. If I need help learning to use the equipment, what should I do?

Make an appointment at the Rec Center front desk for a fitness orientation.

5. Is my guide dog welcome in the Student Rec Center?

Yes, Your guide dog is welcome! Be aware that at peak hours, the facility can be quite crowded, and you and your guide dog may not be as comfortable. Check with a Rec Center staff member at the front desk if you have any questions.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

1. I have a disability and want to enroll in a PE class, but I require special accommodations. What do I do?

It is important that you register with the University’s Disability Services (DS) office, so that PE & REC and DS can work together to meet your needs. For example, if the assigned classroom is inaccessible, every effort is made to relocate the class to an accessible room.

2. What if I require an attendant or interpreter to assist me in class?

The DS office can often locate an attendant or interpreter for students who need one. Also if a disabled student or Rec Center member has a friend who is willing to assist, PE & REC will waive the class fee for that friend. If the attendant/friend wants credit for the class, s/he needs to visit the PE/Rec Sports office (102 Esslinger) to register for the class. The paperwork to waive the fee will be completed there. Ask the DS office to call PE & REC if you have questions about the activity and the need for an attendant.

3. How does an attendant who is not a UO student get in to the Student Rec Center?

PARS is happy to provide a complimentary Rec Center membership to an attendant for the term when s/he is assisting a person with a disability. However, the attendant needs a valid UO Program Card for entry into the facility. To obtain a Program Card the attendant must first visit the Rec Center front desk with documentation from the DS office.

A senior staff member will provide the attendant with membership paperwork (pink copy of form with 'fee waived') to take to the UO card office in the EMU. The card office then issues a UO Program Card to the attendant for a $10.00 fee.
