  • Lifeguards (NOTE: Mandatory lifeguard skills session on Friday, September 21st, 10:00 am-12:00 pm in the SRC Pool).
  • Rec Sports Officials (NOTE: Officials Meeting on Wednesday, September 26th from 6:00-7:00 pm in the SRC Ulrich Room.  Flag football, indoor soccer  and volleyball officials needed.  No experience  necessary all training is provided.

Students who are interested in physical activity and sport are good candidates for the many part-time jobs generated by the large variety of programs and services offered by PE & REC and in the operation of facilities.

Students may apply for any of the more than 150 positions, employing 200 to 250 students each academic year in a variety of areas.

Positions include: Lifeguards, Office Assistants and Sports Officials in Recreational Sports, Rec Techs, Equipment Issue Supervisors, and SRC Student Staff. Lifeguards must have current certification; training is provided for other positions.

These positions are primarily filled by Work-Study and and Tech Fee students.

LIFEGUARD

Lifeguards are required to hold a current American Red Cross lifeguard card and a current CPR for the Professional Rescuer card. All potential candidates are required to pass an in-water skills test and a CPRPR skills test. Working as a U of O lifeguard is challenging, rewarding and convenient.

SRC STUDENT STAFF

Entry level positions to the Facilities Operations Staff include the following:

Weight Room Supervisor

Tennis Center Supervisor

Senior Fitness Assistant

Job Summary: To conduct fitness assessments and personal training sessions with patrons and members of the Student Recreation Center, through one-on-one appointments.  Senior Fitness Assistants will also provide fitness orientations, help plan and implement special programs, act as leaders in the weight room and assist with other fitness duties.  Senior Fitness Assistants are valuable team members of the PE & REC fitness committee and ideas and feedback are crucial to offering the best services. Experience Required:  Successful completion of the Personal Trainer prep course (PEF 399).  Enrollment and/or completion of one PE Weight Training class at the University of Oregon (preferred).

Certification Requirement: Current Adult CPR, AED and Standard First Aid.

Preferred: ACE Personal Trainer certification (or other agency as approved) – within first 3 months of hire.

Office Assistant

Front Desk Supervisor

Lead Rentals and Scheduling Manager

Facility Manager

Job Summary:  lock/unlock facilities, inspect facilities for misuse and vandalism, respond to emergencies, put up volleyball and badminton nets as needed, dry mop gyms as needed, pick up trash in facilities as needed.

REC SPORTS OFFICIAL

Officiates intramural events such as flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball and soccer. No experience necessary; training sessions provided.

OFFICE ASSISTANT - PE/REC SPORTS

Customer service at counter and on telephone. Data entry and report generation on computer. Balance money with receipts. Run errands as needed.


GRADUATE TEACHING FELLOW POSITIONS

PE & REC employs GTF's to fulfill specific responsibilities:

  • Recreational Sports (Rec Sports) responsibilities include team scheduling for intramurals, organizing officials, leading fitness workouts, special events and tournaments. Positions may have responsibility for hiring, training and supervising student employees, organizing events, develoing and implementing programs.

GTF Salary and Benefits

Graduate Teaching Fellows receive a salary ranging from approximately $3,274 to $9,570 per academic year. Graduate Teaching Fellows with a minimum of .20 full-time equivalency (FTE) receive a tuition waiver for the first 16 credits of coursework each term of the appointment. FTE may vary from term to term. Graduate Teaching Fellows are assessed non-instructional fees currently set at $221.50 per term. Most appointments are at .20 FTE ($3,274).

Eligibility Requirements

A. Graduate School

  • Admission to a graduate degree program as a regular student.
  • Register for and complete 9 credit hours of graduate work per term.
  • Satisfactory progress toward a graduate degree.

B. Physical Education and Recreation

  • Strong physical activity background preferred.
  • Organizational skills and experience in officiating or training officials.
  • Recreational sports/Intramural programming experience
  • Current CPR/Universal Precautions Certification and First Aid Certification required .

  • Two letters of recommendation from professionals attesting to your ability to work with intramural programming, officials, etc.
  • Documentation that you have been fully admitted into a graduate program at the UO.
  • Applicants are encouraged to submit materials as soon as possible. Appointments are made as qualified applications are received. GTF appointments are generally completed by April 15 for the following academic year.

ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR POSITIONS

The Physical Education Program hires Adjunct instructors to teach a variety of academic courses (see the list of PE Course Offerings). Adjunct Instructors are individuals from the community who possess a Bachelor's degree, specific sports skills, and the ability to teach. All appointments are less than half time. The current salary structure begins at $605 per class per term, and depends on qualifications and experience.
